We had a restaurant.com certificate for this place ,decided tonight was the night for some Italian, so off we headed to East St. Paul. The outside looks like a diner from the 50's, which possibly could have been because the parking lot in back is covered and has the design of a sonic. We went into this relatively small restaurant with a 70's decor of older tables, worn carpet, napkin wrapped silverware with paper napkin rings, and smelling like Little Italy in the Bronx of New York. I got ready to roll up my sleeves, put a napkin bib on, and dig into some homemade red sauce! Our waitress promptly greeted us and brought us our drinks. The menu is fairly limited, mostly Italian red sauce dishes, a few sandwiches, broasted chicken, and burgers. We were hungry so we ordered some chicken wings for an appetizer. These were just so-so, definitely nothing special about them and would not order them again. I ordered Spaghetti and meatballs and my date ordered a special chicken parmesan which had green pepper, mushrooms, and onions. ( I didn't think that sounded very good but Wow, was I wrong.) The pasta dishes do not come with a salad so you have to order it separately so we shared an anti pasta salad. The salad was fresh, enough for four people to share, and had an incredible Italian dressing. It was served with both garlic bread and Vienna bread. By this time, we are both full and wondering how we are even going to eat our entrees. Our entrees arrived, both of them covered in a delectable red sauce that you could tell was completely authentic, probably handed down from some great grandmother. My spaghetti with meatballs was really good and my dates chicken parmesan was surprisingly awesome. I never thought it would be that good. It was a large flattened chicken breast, lightly breaded and crispy, covered with cheese, caramelized onions, peppers and mushrooms, served on a mound of spaghetti, covered in red sauce. We could only eat a few bites of our entrees so most of it came home with us Our waitress was excellent, refilling drinks without having to ask, and friendly. While we were eating, several "regulars" came in to eat. We knew this because of how the waitress interacted with them. There was only one waitress but she did a great job covering the whole restaurant. We will definitely come back here. They do deliver but I am not sure what their delivery area is but if you live on the East side of St. Paul/Maplewood perhaps, you might be lucky. The prices were incredibly reasonable and the portions enough for 2-3 meals. Ciao' Bella

Romolo's knocked it out of the park for us. We went for dinner on a Tuesday night, when we were crunched for time. We mentioned that to the lady who greeted us, and she said it wouldn't be a problem. She even gave us hints on what to order that would be quickest to prepare. My husband ordered the baked mostaccioli with meatballs. It came on an enormous platter, covered in lightly browned cheese and thick, flavorful marinara. There were also a couple of pieces of bread with butter... all for about $9. My hubby, who has a healthy appetite, could only finish about a third of this robust meal. I ordered the "Romolo's Special", which is a toasted sandwich with a thick Italian sausage patty, two kinds of cheese, bacon, grilled onions, pepperoncini (on the side, but I piled them onto my sandwich), and a dish of marinara for dipping. It was messy, but incredible, and only for $7.25. I want another one right now. Next time we'll try a pizza, or maybe the broasted chicken. And that spumoni looked delish. This place is close to our church, so I'm certain we'll be back sometime soon.

My experience was very different from what others are describing. My boyfriend and I went in for dinner this evening. I ordered baked mostaccioli and he ordered a large sausage and mushroom pizza. After ordering the waitress dropped a basket of room temp generic bread and cold, solid butter packets. The butter grossed me out a bit because when I opened it, it was a solid mass along one side and the top of the package, meaning it had melted on its side and been re-refridgerated at some point. My baked mostaccioli came out and the waitress told us it would be just a minute for the pizza. Several minutes passed and still no pizza. I started eating. The sauce and meatballs were good, but the noodles hadn't been drained properly so everything was a little watery. The waitress told us "just a couple more minutes" again. By the time his pizza came out I was finished eating. She told me she would bring refills to our sodas and never did. We were irritated at that point, and no longer hungry for the pizza (he ended up eating part of my meal because he was hungry) and asked for a box. She dropped a box on us and then ignored us as we struggled to load a hot, messy pizza with a soggy crust into a box without a spatula. All of the middle pieces fell apart as we tried to put them in the box, with the cheese sliding right off the crust. I ended up covered in sauce. We asked for our check with a box and she never bought it, so my boyfriend just handed her a credit card. She decided to stand there and tell us sorry for the service, she just always seems to have at least one table that she just screws up on. Gosh, thanks for clarifying that. Then she says it again when she brings the slip back. Then as we're putting on our coats she tosses a box on top of our pizza box and says "here, to make up for the bad service". It was some type of hazelnut caramel cheesecake and it was awful. The hazelnuts were soggy and the caramel tasted like jarred ice cream topping. We threw it out. We just tried heating up some of the pizza and it's stuck to the cardboard box. We will not be going back.

I have been there several times and never been disappointed. I think they have the best hot dago in the Twin Cities! Fantastic sauce and fantastic sausage!!!

An unusual approach to delivering a buffet, amicable service and pretty good food for a fair price. I am a fan. Four stars from me. Our Diving Team chose Romolo's for a monthly dive-dining adventure. We look for good food where the facade may be uninviting and your digestion may be in danger. Well, Romolo's was none of those things -- we were happily 'disappointed.' The place is family-owned for decades on the northern end of Arcade street, not far west from Lake Phalen. They specialize in 'red Italian' east side food. The neighborhood looks like it was on the happy trend of a revival of sorts. The little place is inviting and very much a neighborhood favorite. There is a small take-out window in the entrance and a little dining area for sit-down patrons. The decor is '1960's Paneling.' They offer a lunch buffet unlike any I've ever experienced. For $8.00 you get a great Italian salad with antipasti mixed right in, This is followed by a large platter with fried chicken wings (meh), a big red meatball and mostaccioli ( good), two slices of pizza (crisp crust, quite good) and bread sticks. The bustling waitress asks you if you want more from those entrees, and will keep bringing you combos of your choice, all on new plates. I like this 'buffet' over the typical self-serve line buffet; the food was hot and fresh. No curdled sauce. No dried, rubbery pizza. And no worries that nasty diners may have dropped something on top of your food. The best surprise is the unlimited spumoni ice cream. It's quite good, somewhere between genuine, fancy spumoni with pistachio nuts (theirs has almonds) and the casein-laced ordinary fare you get at supermarkets. I had two helpings. Ice cream and pizza are my two favorite bad foods. Romolo's made my day. I hope to return there soon.

If you're looking for gourmet experiments that push the limits of what Italian cooking is then this is not the place for you. If you want some good solid Italian cooking done right at a reasonable price then you're bound to be delighted with Romolo's. The menu is pretty simple, consisting mostly of things like spaghetti, chicken parmigiana, a variety of sandwiches, and of course very good pizza. Highly recommended!

Flavors I rarely get from a restaurant. Fresh, not frozen anything. Deep rich flavors. I found myself still tasting the meal an hour later, and still enjoying the smell, taste, and texture of the food at Romolo's. I am telling people about the place now. I even contacted Diners, Driveins, and Dives. Not sure if they'll show but I wanted to give the restaurant a chance for some exposure. The food is as good as it gets. Thanks

Great pizza with cool atmosphere! An old, converted drive-in, this place just looks like a classic! Always great food, although dine-in pizza seemed to taste better than take-out. Great food at a great price!

The food is surprisingly very good for a hole in the wall restaurant. The baked mostacolli is excellent and the sizes are large but the price is under $10.. I've recommended it to many people after I was there. Friendly service. My only complaint(s) are minor, the bread was stale on the takeout order. Don't know if the heat in the bag made it appear stale? Plus they forgot butter. AND ouch! The take out bag was so hot that I could have literally gotten burn blisters from it....they need to better insulate their containers or put handles on the bag, to avoid burning a customer. I think they must take it straight from the oven (right in it's container it was baked it) and throw it in a thin paper bag? Really guys? Dangerous.

Pretty darn good spaghetti and dinner salad I had here and the prices were very good.

My husband, grandmother and I enjoyed fantastic take-out from Romolos. We had spaghetti with sausage and meatballs. It was wonderful. Complimentary bread just made it so much better. The price was fair. The staff was friendly and our food was hot and ready when we arrived to pick it up.

$20 for an extra large, three-topping pizza and 10 wings? Yes, please. I'd eat almost anything for that price, but Romolos was good. Very, very good. The place was busy and still managed to give great service. Can't wait to return again.

I love the pizza-- old school thin crust with amazing sauce. I haven't had much outside of the pizza here, but what I have had is a tad greasy for my tastes. Stick with the pizza and you'll be happy.

I asked an elderly Italian woman (who is a fabulous cook) where she goes for authentic Italian food in St. Paul and she sent me here. I bet I have driven by this joint 100 times over the years and bothered to try it. I grabbed some sauce and meatballs to go and was very pleased with both, and the prices. Half dozen meatballs and a quart of sauce for $12.00. The meatballs were flavorful, moist and the sauce was excellent. I know what I will be feeding my family during Vikes games this fall & winter.

The food was very good; my husband & I split the antipasto salad & each had a baked pasta for dinner. The salad was the best I have had since Vittoro's closed. The service was a little slow considering there were only 2 additional occupied tables. The food was so plentiful, we both had to bring half of our meals home.

Delicious food and a great family atmosphere! We had two extra large pizza specials with wings for our group of 10 and it was super tasty. Very friendly management and staff! I'll definitely be back, the pizza was some of the best I've ever had.

Small town atmosphere, had the spaghetti and meatball special. Got a lot of food for only 6.95. Not too bad.

Sorry, but I was hoping for something a little more Italian authentic. No Chianti available. They had Zinfandel, but only white. The country music playing over the speakers didn't help. Food and service were adequate.

Hidden Gem. Go after 7:00pm so you're not fighting with the legions of blue hairs. This business has customers that have been going for 35-40 years or more.. so you know it's good. My favorite so far is their pizza... specifically the House Specialty. Their sausage is locally made and their sauce and crust is outstanding. If you're reading this it probably means you've not thought about Romolo's because they've flown under the radar for so many years.

We just moved in a block and a half away and have walked over several times. Romolos is a great red-sauce kitchen, which I'd never heard of until I was describing it to a friend who provided the term. Their pastas are great if that's your thing, but their pizza is out of this world!!! The service is fabulous too- sometimes they are a little short on the phone if you call during peak hours, but I don't think it's rudeness, because every interaction I've had there in person has been wonderful. We love the food here and will be taking everyone we know who likes pizza!

LOVED your pizza, but had the misfortune of ordering a side salad which was largely composed of limp lettuce with many spots of black bacteria. GROSS. Not okay. Had I been dining in, I would have sent it back to the kitchen, but alas I got take out. My husband stated that when he picked it up, the salad was sitting on the oven with the pizza and he noticed on the way home it was warm Please instruct your kitchen staff on how to safely handle and store produce- this is not safe food handling and does not meet food standards. Lettuce should never be served that has black spots on it.

We were impressed with how friendly and warm the staff was to us. Both owners stopped by and struck up a conversation & made sure we had what we needed. This place has a very welcome-locals-neighborhood feel and we enjoyed it. We had baked mostaccioli and lasagna and they were both delicious, generous portions. To top it off, they brought us complimentary pizza bread with their red sauce and a sampler of desserts at the end. We couldn't really believe that they were being so nice to us but it seemed very genuine. We will definitely go back and now we know why the regulars do :)

Romolos pizza is the best on the east side bar none. Great food fabulous service. The pizza is thin crust and in the Midwest style of square cut. Sausage is wonderful meatballs are a signature topping. They also offer pasta dishes burgers and for the adults, enjoy your meal with a glass of wine. Of the many choices for pizza in east st Paul I highly recommend Romolos.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
